Activation Health

Overview

Activation Health is a clinical research application developed by the University of Calgary. This privacy policy explains how we collect, use, store, and protect your information when you use the Activation Health app.

Information We Collect

With your explicit permission, the app collects:

Health Data (via Apple HealthKit):

• Mobility metrics: walking speed, step length, walking asymmetry
• Gait metrics: stair speed, six-minute walk distance
• Cardiovascular metrics: heart rate, blood pressure
• Activity metrics: steps, distance, flights climbed, active energy
• Sleep analysis: duration and quality

Survey Responses:

• PROMIS patient-reported outcome surveys completed at scheduled timepoints

Study Participation Data:

• Anonymized participant identifier (contains no personally identifiable information)
• Study enrollment status and consent date
• Survey completion timestamps

How We Use Your Data

Your data is used exclusively for the research purposes described in your study consent form. Data is:

• Analyzed by authorized research team members only
• Used to evaluate recovery outcomes as part of approved research studies
• Never sold, shared with third parties, or used for advertising

Data Security

• All data is transmitted using HTTPS with TLS 1.2+ encryption
• Data is stored on University of Calgary institutional servers with database encryption
• Access is restricted to authorized research team members
• The app follows HIPAA-compliant practices for research data handling

Apple HealthKit

• HealthKit data is read-only — the app does not write to your health records
• You choose which health categories to share during enrollment
• You can modify or revoke HealthKit permissions at any time through the iOS Settings app under Health > Data Access & Devices

Your Rights

• You may withdraw from the study at any time through the app's Settings
• Upon withdrawal, you may discuss with the research team whether previously collected data should be deleted or retained for analysis, per the study protocol
• All studies using Activation Health have been approved by the University of Calgary Research Ethics Board
